Earls in Japanese call Arus, so Arus melon also mean Earl's type melon.

Earl's type melon is said to have been introduced to Japan from UK since 100 years ago and then developed in Japan.

1) Seed
Some may think bought melon from market, cut and dug out the seeds to plant.
The seeds dug out in this way are called F2-Filial 2.
The second generation seeds is not able to grow the characteristics of the original melon.
Skin not same flesh no taste.
Some melon seeds, such as Yubari King and Crown Melon, their first-generation seed are not sold, only for contract farmer, seeds is their top commercial secret.
Quality seed is key to success for a company.
Seed is high tech industry, it related to gene technology, microbiology, agronomy.

2) Experience Grower
Earl's type melon is the most difficult melon to grow, because it no resistant against virus and diseases.
It must grown in greenhouse to block pests and virus .
Malaysia melon grower are very new to Earls type.
Yamato Noen passed the techniques and solved all the problems encountered by melon grower.
A melon take around 75 days to harvest, but Earls type take 90 days and above.
The longer planting time, the higher failure probability, because pests and diseases is more difficult to control.
Earls type must grown by experience farmer, newbie impossible to grow.
This is why a good quality Earl's type melon is more expensive, as it is the most difficult variety to grow.
3) Ample of sunlight

Full sunlight is very important for growing a good quality melon..
Jade melon slogan ' bigger size, better quality' relies on ample sunlight in Malaysia.
Melons like warm and heat but not cold, and require more than 10 hours of full sunlight a day.
From November to April, it is quite hard to buy Japan produce Earls melon at Malaysia and Singapore.
It very challenge for farmer to grow a high quality melon when this time.
Sweet level will be affect because low sunlight, little photosynthetic.
Sometimes the weather is too cold, heater will be needed, it cost more for a farmer.
The second reason is melon price is much higher, it can double to triple compare with other months.
For a fruit trader, the cost is higher but the quality cannot be assure when winter time.
It is very risky for fruit trader to trade melon at this time.
Maybe this is the reason why it is hard to find Japan produce melon when November to April.
4) Quality Control
Each melon must check with a sugar level meter before it sell.
This Japanese-made Brix meter costs $400k Yen, while the normal brix meter is RM30-300.
After the sugar test pass, we then classified melon by weight and skin appearance.
Fuji, Yama, Shiro, and Yuki is grade for earls type melon.
For import Earl's type melon, Shiro grade retails price is RM140-RM160/kg, ours is RM50/kg.
